Emergency Pet Services in Katy

emergency pet care at Katy Area Veterinary

Our knowledgeable and skilled emergency veterinarian believes that your pets should always have access to the highest quality vet care available, especially in an emergency. During office hours we will do everything we can to accommodate your sick or injured pet.

When Should You Visit Our Emergency Animal Hospital?

Because your pets can’t tell you what’s wrong with them, sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether or not you need emergency vet care. Some of the most common reasons why your pet may need emergency care include:

  • Animal bites and insect stings
  • Other wounds or cuts
  • Auto accidents
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Household or food poisoning
  • Choking

Are you still unsure if you’re dealing with a pet emergency? If you ever feel like your pet may be in immediate danger, you can call our offices during regular business hours for further instructions. If you call after business hours, our phone system will offer you a local listing of other 24-hour or after hours emergency animal clinics. However, if you clearly have a pet emergency on your hands, we ask that you remain calm and please call ahead so that we can do our best to prepare for your arrival.

Other Common Pet Emergency Situations

Each family pet is unique and so are the different reasons that you may need to make an urgent visit to our offices. Some of the other common vet emergency situations that you should look out for include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures or fainting
  • Loss of appetite or dehydration that lasts more than 24 hours
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Unexplained bleeding from the eyes, mouth or nose
  • Extreme pain that includes shaking, whining or refusal to socialize

What Should You Do in a Pet Emergency?

If you believe that your pet is in distress or experiencing an emergency, it is important to remain calm and act quickly. If your pet is in pain, they may act aggressively or panic. Remember that this is normal behavior and do your best to keep them comfortable. Other possible life-saving steps that you can take include:

  • For choking pets, work quickly and safely to remove any blockage. If necessary, perform a modified Heimlich maneuver with sharp and fast pressure to remove foreign objects.
  • If your pet has external bleeding, elevate the area and apply pressure to the wound.
  • If your pet has ingested something poisonous, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or call our offices immediately for further instructions.
